Becoming a NY HealthCorps VISTA Member

Have You Thought About Serving With Community HealthCorps*VISTA?

Eligibility

You must be at least 18 years old, but there is no upper age limit. Most programs seek members with college degrees or at least three years of work experience. Many Community HealthCorps*VISTA members bring significant work and life experiences to their assignment. Initiative, flexibility, and organizational skills are a must. You must be available to serve full-time at least 35 hours per week for one year (12 months).


Benefits

• End of Service Award (stipend) of $1,500 or $5,350 education award - both taxable. Applicants are encouraged to choose the education award because it can be changed to the end of service stipend during the first ten months of service. Once the stipend is chosen, no change is possible.
• Stafford and Perkins loan deferment and forbearance
• Health insurance coverage—limited insurance and Medicaid coverage
• Food stamp eligibility
• Childcare assistance
• 10 vacation,10 sick and 5 emergency days or holidays
• Relocation assistance up to $550, depending on the distance moved

Member Living Allowance {taxable}:

• VISTA members receive a yearly living allowance of $13,956 in New York City, and $10,080 in Long Island. The living allowance in other areas of New York State varies.

Steps for applying to the Community HealthCorps*VISTA:

1. Visit the my.americorps.gov website
2. Click: "Apply to Serve"
3. Create Profile by completing the 4 Step process
4. In "service area" highlight: Health
5. In "state" highlight: New York
6. In "program type" highlight: AmeriCorps* VISTA
7. Then, click the "search" button. This will open a list of our programs in New York State.
8. Click "New York Community HealthCorps" and go to the bottom of the page and click: "show details."
9. At the bottom of the page, check the box that starts with "Yes!" and then click the button: "Apply for Selected Program(s)."
10. This will bring you to the online application. Complete the application and it will be forwarded to the selected program electronically.
11. New York - also submit a resume and completed Community HealthCorps*VISTA Supplemental Application to vista@nachc.com.
12. View the Position Description Summary. Indicate top three positions of interest on your Community HealthCorps*VISTA Supplemental Application (above).
