Healthy Roots Gardening Project

Healthy Roots Gardening Project

After volunteering in a local community garden, a few members of our team wanted to rent our own plot of land to grow vegetables. Though many of us have limited experience, we were able to pool our diverse knowledge and create a great service project. We have worked daily on this garden and have begun to harvest our own vegetables. We will use these vegetables to create food to eat together, and donate some to a local food bank. We have also been sharing our knowledge and experience with the local community through a blog, and will create pamphlets. We planted the first seedlings during AmeriCorps week, with the help of some NACHC visitors. It was nice that after days of coordinating events for our patients, we got to spend some time alone with each other doing an activity outside. In addition to helping our community, it has enriched our Community HealthCorps experience because it has helped us bond, we have learned how to do this together, learned from each other, and have been able to spend time outside working on the garden and we are planning team picnics while we work. It is fun to be able to tell people that I have another day at the office- and the office is really outside in the bright sunshine!
