Partnership with The Cancer Project

Food for Life Program

We are pleased to announce a new partnership with The Cancer Project. The Cancer Project is a not-for-profit organization that has two main goals: they make cancer prevention a top priority; and they want to improve survival after cancer has been diagnosed by providing comprehensive information about the role of dietary factors in keeping people healthy.

The Cancer Project will provide their Food for Life certification training program for Community HealthCorps members, alumni and staff of participating organizations. All interested programs of Community HealthCorps (including New York VISTA) can participate - not only for certification, but also to offer these nutrition education and cooking demonstration classes in health centers and/or other community locations.

Some of the components of the opportunity are as follows:

• A Food for Life nutrition and cooking training certification.
  
• A 2-hour Nutrition Orientation and Logistics Review via distance learning
   
• Anticipate 10 to 12 training hours (4-session series), not including additional reading and watching videos in Decemer, 2009 through January, 2010.
  
• Training will be web-based, conference calls and attending cooking classes.
  
• Monthly conference calls for training, and technical assistance.
  
• Where possible, HealthCorps members will be mentored by local/regional Food for Life instructors.
  
• Participants will be expected to conduct classes and outreach activities through their placement and in communities.
  
• Participants will be encouraged to develop healthy eating communities (self help groups) in their areas, and to work with local businesses to provide healthy produce in those communities.
