Community HealthCorps Member Spotlight!

Community HealthCorps member Ron Contreras is currently serving 11 health centers through HealthReach in Waterville, Maine.  Assigned to Penobscot Community Health Care (www.pchcbangor.org), he travels throughout Kennebec County and beyond providing outreach services.
“Throughout my life, my educational and professional goals have always been my priority. After working hard to reach these goals, I realize that self-preservation has inevitably also been a priority. Recently I've had personal difficulties in completing my schooling. Although it is my plan to finish my medical degree I feel the need to really step away from academia as I've been involved with some sort of post high-school education for almost 15 years straight at this point. With my time off from medical school I had initially planned to finish my PhD as a break from medicine but I was introduced to AmeriCorps through CHANCES for Indiana Youth while volunteering for a summer camp. The staff includes many AmeriCorps members.  It's been amazing to see selflessness at a new level.
It's been an extraordinary experience to not only find the willingness in myself to help the community at this level but also to see within the AmeriCorps members a true charity with their time and talents towards people. After researching some of the programs throughout Indiana and beyond I've found that I would be able to use my experiences and education to help communities. My expectation through serving with AmeriCorps is that I'll not only be able to find a challenging and enjoyable program for myself but continue to help people with the same fervor that I've witnessed recently.”

Ron plans to return to Indiana at the end of term to finish his medical degree. HealthReach recently published a press release profiling Ron in celebration of AmeriCorps Week 2011 (to view the full press release, click here). Thank you Ron for your dedication to service and helping to bring underserved communities greater access to healthcare in Maine!
